Italy Travel Guide

As an Italian-American, this travel guide holds a special place in my heart. Italy is a beloved destination for travelers worldwide, and for good reason. Its cuisine, natural beauty, art, and rich cultural heritage make it my favorite place to explore. Here is a comprehensive list of my favorite experiences in some of Italy’s most iconic destinations!

Milan

Milan is one of the most underrated cities in Italy, which is why it’s one of my favorites. For a quick yet delicious bite, I recommend Panzerotti Luini, Miscusi, or All’antico Vinaio. If you want to shop until you drop, go vintage at Urzi Vintage or Vintage Delirium. For a night out, I highly suggest taking a trip down to the Navigli. It’s a lively area perfect for grabbing drinks or a late-night bite right on the canals. As the fashion capital of Italy, a visit to Milan isn't complete without stopping by Fondazione Prada and Armani Silos. If you're in the mood for luxury, definitely check out the QC Termemilano Spa!

Lake Como

Lake Como is straight out of a fairytale. I recommend flying into Milan and then staying in Bellagio, the perfect home base for exploring Tremezzo and Varenna. Borgo Le Terrazze is a fantastic hotel option if you're looking for something nice yet reasonably priced. For dinner in Bellagio, Dispensa 63 is an excellent choice, but make sure to reserve a spot as it fills up quickly!

Consider heading to Varenna and booking a boat tour to fully enjoy the lake's beauty. Don't miss dining at Cafe Varenna. If you have time, take a ferry to Tremezzo. Enjoy drinks at Cantina Follie and visit the public garden, famous as a Star Wars filming location. Make a reservation for aperitivo or dinner at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. And while you're in Lake Como, be sure to try the lake perch risotto, a local specialty you won’t want to miss!

Florence

Florence is a city that seamlessly blends rich history with modern charm, making it a must-visit destination. For a culinary adventure, don't miss Gusta Pizza and All’Antico Vinaio, where you can indulge in some of the best pizza and sandwiches in town. For a more refined dining experience, Ristorante Il Ricettario (the best pesto pasta I’ve ever had), Osteria Santo Spirito or La Giostra offer exquisite Italian cuisine that will leave you wanting more. Make sure to try at least one famous Bistecca alla Fiorentina while you here.

For nightlife, Club Flo is the perfect spot to dance the night away with views looking over the hills of Tuscany. If you’re a fan of fashion, the Gucci Museum is a must-see, showcasing the brand's luxurious heritage. You MUST reserve your spot for the Galleria dell'Accademia, home to Michelangelo's David.

For a memorable day trip, head to Chianti to savor some of Italy’s finest wines amidst picturesque vineyards. And for a luxurious shopping experience, visit the luxury mall to find high-end Italian and international brands. Florence’s blend of culture, cuisine, and charm ensures an unforgettable visit.

Amalfi coast

The Amalfi Coast (I visited Sorrento, Capri, and Positano) is a stunning destination filled with picturesque views and delightful experiences. Start your adventure with a day trip to Capri, where you can relax at Lido Beach and explore the charming Marina Grande. Porta Marina offers a scenic spot to enjoy the coastal beauty. For a unique seafood experience, visit La Pescheria Le Botteghe, a seafood market perfect for a late lunch.

For dining, A’Marenna and La Locanda Del Gusto in Sorrento provide delectable meals, while Nhambu is perfect for those seeking cheap eats. La Cantinaccia del Popolo and Il Ruttino (I went here 3 times during my stay) offer authentic local flavors.

In Positano, treat yourself to exquisite meals at Aldo’s at Sirenuse, Bruno’s, and Casa Mele. In Capri, La Capannina and Buonocore are must-visit spots for delicious food and a charming ambiance. Whether you're savoring fresh seafood, exploring beautiful beaches, or indulging in local cuisine, the Amalfi Coast promises an unforgettable experience.

rome

Rome is a city brimming with history, culture, and culinary delights. Start your day at Roscioli Caffè Pasticceria for a delicious breakfast and then take a leisurely walk around the city to soak in its vibrant atmosphere. A visit to the Colosseum is a must to witness the grandeur of ancient Rome. For drinks with a view, head to the Court Rooftop Bar at Palazzo Manfredi. Don’t miss the iconic Pantheon and make sure to grab some Supplizio and drinks as you explore. Hang out in Trastevere, particularly at Piazza Trilussa, for a lively evening atmosphere. For dinner, Roma Sparita, Tonnarello, and Da Enzo offer authentic Roman cuisine. Start your next day with a coffee at Sant' Eustachio Il Caffè and then visit Vatican City to marvel at its stunning art and architecture. Make sure to visit the Trevi Fountain. Finally, Mangia e Trevi is a great spot if you must eat near the famous fountain.

cinque terre

Cinque Terre is a breathtaking destination renowned for its scenic hikes, villages, and delicious cuisine. I recommend staying in Vernazza at the Hotel Gianni Franzi which is charming and family-run. While you are there, you have to hike the five towns and stop for lunch during your journey at Nessun Dorma.

For a unique culinary experience, take a pesto-making class and learn the art of creating this regional specialty. Enjoy a meal at Belforte, known for its stunning views and delectable dishes. For a casual bite, grab some focaccia from Il Frantoio to bring to the beach.

For lunch and drinks, Pippo a Vernazza is an excellent choice. For dinner, Torre Aurora offers a delightful dining experience with panoramic views. Don't miss out on Il Pirata delle 5 Terre for a taste of local flavors. For drinks, head to The Deck, a perfect spot to unwind with a beautiful view. And of course, treat yourself to some delicious gelato at Gelateria Vernazza. With its blend of outdoor activities, culinary delights, and stunning vistas, Cinque Terre promises an unforgettable adventure.

To finish off this blog, just remember it is important to make sure you eat gelato (from the little silver tins) at least once a day during your stay. Enjoy!
